From The Perch - Aviculture Today is a podcast that is intended for education and entertainment.  Neither one of the hosts claims to be an expert, but have experience in the avian field and enjoys sharing their opinions on various topics.  The hosts and guests may not sometimes agree on topics, but isn't that life?  An ever-growing changing metamorphosis of learning?  Sit back, relax and please have a good time with From The Perch!  We sure do.!

About the Hosts of From The Perch - Aviculture Today


Dr. Jason Crean is a degreed biologist, an enthusiastic educator, and an avid aviculturist, specializing in the propagation of green aracaris and white-backed mousebirds, President of The Avicultural Society of Chicagoland, Vice-President and Education Chair for the American Federation of Aviculture, and founder of the Avian Raw Whole Food Nutrition group and Team Thrive! Membership program on Facebook.  Dr. Crean is a well-known speaker for avicultural groups and zoo staff across the country and acts as consultant to zoos and other institutions, including the Chicago Nature Museum and Wildlife Genetics Laboratory.  He also runs a live animal education program that does free interactive programs for a host of different audiences as he believes education is the most important factor in keeping aviculture thriving.


Crean is also a biology instructor, teaching courses such as Zoo Biology: Animal Nutrition, Husbandry, & Diagnostics as well as Vertebrate Zoology and other biology courses.  Dr. Crean has been awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching by the White House in 2009, the 2010 Science Leadership Prize by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as awards from the National Science Teachers Association, the National Association of Biology Teachers, the Illinois Science Teachers Association, and the Golden Apple Foundation. He has served as President for the Illinois Science Teachers Association, President for the Illinois Association of Biology Teachers, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Association of Presidential Awardees in Science Teaching and the College Board’s National Science Advisory Panel.


B.D. Butler BS is an avid aviculture enthusiast, who has owned birds since he was in his preteens. B.D. has completed the the AFA Fundamentals of Aviculture courses and continues his education in the world of aviculture, with diet, training, enrichment and other seminars.

B.D. is currently the president of The Gilded Feather Foundation a 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to the education of exotic bird owners and the improvement of their bird's lives.  B.D. is also the owner and operator of Greywood Manor Provisions, a holistic pet supply company, providing natural, pet safe products for your household and pets.  While writing for the Parrot Earth blog for ten years, B.D. has been featured in several publications throughout the world.  B.D. continues to be a parrot advocate, works with rescues and helps to rehome birds in the Pacific Northwest.  B.D. has also raised over $60,000 in the past years for several charities in the greater Seattle area and continues these efforts.
